Concealed Home Cinema in Derby

As part of a full home renovation in Derby, our client wanted a cinema room that could serve two purposes. During the day, the space functions as a stylish living area with a traditional television, while at the touch of a button it transforms into a dedicated home cinema.

The standout feature is a concealed 104-inch projection screen that descends in front of the patio doors, creating a true big-screen movie experience without permanently impacting the room's aesthetics.

Challenges and Solutions

The room needed to balance everyday practicality with high-performance cinema. With large patio doors occupying the projection wall, there was no space for a fixed screen, while the client also wanted to retain a conventional television for everyday viewing.

The descending projection screen also ruled out the use of a traditional centre speaker, requiring careful system design to ensure clear dialogue without compromising the room's clean appearance.

A Pure Theatre CR240 motorised 104-inch screen was designed to be concealed within a bespoke halo ceiling. When not in use, the screen is completely hidden, preserving the open feel of the room and allowing the patio doors to remain the focal point. The halo ceiling also houses the two Dolby Atmos in-ceiling speakers, keeping all technology neatly integrated while delivering immersive overhead effects.

Rather than incorporating a projector lift, the client opted for a permanent boxed enclosure for the Epson EH-TW9400 projector. This provided a clean, cost-effective installation while maintaining the correct projection position and easy access for servicing.

To overcome the lack of a dedicated centre speaker, the system was configured with high-performance left and right front speakers, creating a convincing phantom centre channel for clear, natural dialogue across the seating area.

Outcome

The finished cinema perfectly complements the renovated home, offering the best of both worlds. The client enjoys a traditional television for everyday use, while the concealed 104-inch screen transforms the room into a true home cinema whenever it's movie night.

The combination of the Epson 4K PRO-UHD projector, JBL speaker system and REL subwoofer delivers a powerful, immersive 4.1.2 surround sound experience, all while keeping the technology discreetly hidden within the room's design.

The result is a clean, elegant entertainment space that proves high-performance home cinema doesn't have to dominate the room when it's not in use.
